Wildlife of Big Bay

There are many sights to see in Big Bay, but one of our most treasured is the wiildlife that we share this beautiful country with. Featured here are only a few of the animals that you might see when visiting our little village.

Racoons are shy in the daytime, but if you look hard enough and are quiet you might see a couple. Just remember to lock up your coolers at night. They love a good steak and a cold beer.

Another critter that's common up here is the beaver. Unlike racoons, beavers pretty much keep to themselves. If you are lucky enough to find some, they are fun to watch working on their dens and dams.

One animal that you likely to see at any time of the year are Canadian Geese. Although most make their way to Canada in the spring, many spend their summers here, and a very few stay year 'round.

If you are careful and go slow when driving up here, you might see a Fox or two cross the road. Foxes are usually shy, but they like the small game that inhabit the trees along the road.

Red Fox

Ther are a few animals up here that make dog owners shudder. One of them is the Porcupine. Some people think that Porcupines shoot their quills. They don't. The quills only work when a predator (or curious dog) get too close. If your dog does find a Porcupine, don't try to take them out yourself. Find a vet.

The Black Bear is quite common in the woods around Big Bay. Years ago, the town had a landfill that the bears could find an easy snack. With the landfill closed, the bears sometimes come into town at night looking for food. They're harmless as long as you watch them from a distance.

Black Bear

Here are some pictures of a very hungry Black Bear. They were taken through a living room window and which apparently didn't bother the bear a bit. The owners of these photos have graciously given their permission for us to post these pictures and we thank them.

Some people that visit this area think these animals are dangerous. They're not. If you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. Remember, you're in their home.
