A SENSE OF

HISTORY

We are now equipped with wireless internet!

The year was 1905 and the Big Bay Depot was the center of activity for the bustling town of Big Bay. After a prosperous twenty years, the "Great White Pine Logging Era" diminished as well as the town, which now has apopulation of only 250. A boom town turned small to locals, a vacation destination for others.

Henry Ford took an interest in the area, and in 1940 purchased the Thunder Bay Inn as a retreat. The Depot blocked his view of Lake Independence and was moved 250' from its orginal site. The train quit running in the late 1940s and in the early 1960s, reopened for tours from Marquette to Big Bay. Unfortunately, the tracks weres uprooted in the 1980s.
The original train station, now refurbished and thriving again, houses five uniquely decorated suites. Overlooking Lake Independence, the view from the Depot is one of quiet beauty.

We offer you all rooms with a Lake View

FOR THE OUTDOOR E NTHUSIAST...

Mountains to the west contain a half-million acres of land for public use with non-motored vehicles. This land is criss-crossed with logging trails that make it ideal for mountain bikes, hikers, climbers, cross-country skiers and snow shoers. Also available from our front door is a fabulous snowmobile trail!

Near the Depot, fishing is superb and versatile. We now have lake access and Lake Independence offers perch, northern and walleye. One mile away, Lake Superior supplies salmon and lake trout. Brook, rainbow and brown trout are found in nearby streams. The hardwood forests support moose, bear, deer, fishers, coyotes, wolves, snowshoe hares and partridge for the lucky photographer. Tour guide available.

In late September or early October, maples contribute to the awe-inspiring fall colors. Deer and bear hunting season September through December. Whether you are enjoying outdoor activities or just want to relax in the quiet, Big Bay has it all.
